My name is Mia McPherson, and I'm a stay-at-home parent living in the so-called "resume gap".
In my former full-time working life, I was a publishing executive and director of content marketing at a large technology firm. I have a bachelor's degree in Journalism and an MBA in Organizational Leadership.
Even on my best days, when a large part of my job was to elevate my team members and help them get promotions or otherwise further their careers, none of my jobs could hold a candle to the fulfillment and joy of being a stay-at-home parent.
All too often, I hear people who have taken breaks in their careers -- especially stay-at-home moms -- voice concerns about their future career prospects. They believe they need to prove themselves professionally again by starting at the bottom. They wonder how they'll balance work with parenthood and still remain present for every special moment. They fret over how they'll explain "the gap."
I would love for more individuals, as well as employers, to embrace the gap, own the gap, and take pride in the gap. I'm living my dream as a stay-at-home parent, award-winning freelancer, business owner, and school board and non-profit board member. And I want to help others realize their professional goals without having to sacrifice or minimize their gaps.
